Private home, Turku

When two people’s lives are combined, the sum of their parts creates more interesting wholes. Both their cherished memories, design treasures, slightly more embarrassing favorites, and practical necessities found their place in Turku.

The frames of the beautiful old house, the arches of the doorways, and the French balconies were surrounded by warm shades on the walls. The old kitchen was preserved but the island, countertops, and backsplash tiles were renewed. Self-made teak handles changed the look of the 10-year-old kitchen. The structure was clarified by removing a partition wall between the fireplace room and the kitchen to create spaciousness and room for a large dining table. The gaps and creaks of the plank floors support the atmosphere of the house; the floor was painted light.

Furniture and lamps were brought from both their previous homes and from parents. The interior is a mix of flea market finds, design classics, and spiced with a few real discoveries. The bookshelf in the TV room was left over from a colleague’s project and was quite a puzzle, but now it’s the absolute crown of the room. The old cash register counter serves as a desk and has seen many different landscapes before Turku. The WC floor tiles are a leftover batch from the Habitare Signals exhibition a few years ago. The bedroom’s dressing table was assembled from a perfect bedroom furniture set found at Ekotor, combining the best parts to create a functional whole. With a functional cassette player and lights!

The best part of a home is always its inhabitants, the atmosphere that each person living there creates <3.
